The sightseeing tour leads through the town centre where we will pass the church of Hammerfest. The first stop is on the other side of the bay: The Struve Geodetic Arc. This UNESCO World Heritage Site marks the northernmost measured point of a scientific project from the 19th century. Next stop is the mountain Salen where we will stop for the second time. At the viewpoint you can take beautiful pictures.

Into the Ice

Join our arctic expedition on the mountain Salen in Hammerfest. On this excursion we tell about the great age of exploration, especially Roald Amundsens South Pole expedition. Amundsen was accompanied by our local hero Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm who was a polar chef. He became famous for his various talents, his positive attitude and his signature dish – Biff à la Lindstrøm. We provide an arctic expedition outfit and bring you to the mountain by bus. There we will have a walk on the ice towards the summit to plant the Norwegian flag. Eventually we will make it to Café Framheim which is a cozy tent with a fireplace. Here we serve a taste of Biff à la Lindstrøm and hot cakes.

Hiking Tour on Gammelveien

The hiking tour takes you along Hammerfest’s Gammelveien or “Old Path” which was completed in 1898. After leaving the ship, this guided walk passes Hammerfest’s church before heading out of town and up to the best viewpoints in the area. The path towards the peak is quite steep, so be prepared for some physically challenging activity. You will be rewarded with a fantastic view towards the islands of Melkøya, Sørøya and Seiland. The hike brings you also to Jannsvannskogen, Hammerfest’s only forest and to the viewpoint on the mountain Salen, before we head back to the tourist information. The guide is providing typical Norwegian tour snacks and tea during the tour.

Fishing rod rental

 

The town of Hammerfest and its surroundings are perfect for fishing. The sea and several waters invite you to long fishing trips. Cod, halibut, Pollock and also fingerling and salmon trout are all-around in our parts of Finnmark. It is possible to rent fishing rods in the tourist information in Hammerfest to go on your own catch. Here you get information about good fishing grounds and the matching fishing lures as well.

E-Bike-Tour in Hammerfest

Hammerfest is moving – we take that literally! Experience our town on a guided tour with electric bikes. First stop is the Struve Geodetic Arc, our UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hammerfest, which marks the northernmost measuring point of a geodetic project from the 19th century. After that we head for the Energy House, which shows all the aspects of our rich energy history, including the first electrical street lights in northern Europe and the current gas and oil adventure. In the end our tour leads to the viewpoint on the mountain Salen with its fantastic view over the bay of Hammerfest.

A sightseeing tour by bus is the most convenient way to experience Hammerfest. This two-hour tour leads you to the essential sights of our town. We visit the Polar Bear Society to learn about the tough times of artic fishing and hunting in Hammerfest and the famous polar expeditions. After this we head to the viewpoint on the mountain Salen. The last stop is the Struve Geodetic Arc, our UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This two-hour tour leads you to the historical highlights of our town. We visit the Museum of Reconstruction with its impressive exhibition about the time of World War II and the reconstruction time that followed. After that we visit the Polar Bear Society with its 250.000 members from all over the world. Here you learn about the history of arctic fishing and hunting in Hammerfest. We conclude with a stop at the Struve Geodetic Arc, a scientific project from the 19th century.

E-Bike rental

Are you in the mood of discovering Hammerfest on your own and looking for a comfortable and fun way to do that? Then our electrical bikes are the right thing for you! Visit us at the tourist information and get bike, battery, helmet, lock and if needed recharger and explore our town as you like it. An e-bike supports you with a strong electrical engine to manage steep passages. You find several suggestions for tours at the tourist information. We recommend reserving a bike in advance. The age limit is 15 years.

 

Hammerfest Sightseeing «Modern»

This two-hour tour has a focus on the modern times in Hammerfest with its energy adventure. The main attraction on this excursion is the Energy House. It houses a water turbine and an exhibition about the different energy sources used and produced in and around Hammerfest. Afterwards the bus will bring you to the viewpoint on the mountain Salen. Last stop is the Polar Bear Society in the centre of Hammerfest. Here you see an exhibition about the early development of Hammerfest as a hub for artic fishing and hunting as a contrast to the modern focus on gas industry.

Mikkelgammen – Sami Camp

Your journey to the North of Norway brings you to the traditional settlement areas of the Sami people. On this bus excursion to the Sami camp Mikkelgammen you learn everything about culture and religion of the natives in the North. Your hosts Mikkel and Solveig invite you to try traditional delicacies, for example dried reindeer meat, cloudberry jam and smoked salmon. After that you are heading to the nearby viewpoint on the mountain Salen which offers a beautiful view.

Stockfish in Forsøl

On this excursion we take you to a little and charming fishing village on the other side of the island Kvaløya called Forsøl. Here you will find the traditional fish drying racks and get a sample of this Norwegian bestseller. Afterwards we are going back to Hammerfest where we are stopping at the Polar Bear Society. Here you learn about our past on 70 degrees north, especially related to arctic fishing and hunting and polar expeditions. Strolling city centre

Strolling around the town centre is the best choice if you want to discover Hammerfest by foot. We start at the tourist information and visit the protestant church of Hammerfest. We continue with the Museum of Reconstruction. The museum’s exhibition displays the incidents of World War II in the North of Norway and how this region was reconstructed afterwards. At last you learn about the period of arctic hunting and fishing in Hammerfest by visiting the Polar Bear Society.

Frisbee Golf

Now this excursion is something for our sports-mad guests. Here we focus on activity and competition. We take the El-Bikes up to the mountain Salen and play a Frisbee Golf tournament. Frisbee Golf demands precision and accuracy to hit the target with the disc. As an alternative it is possible to take a bus or walk up to the facilities. Very popular are arrangements in combination with Sami camp Mikkelgammen which is close-by. A nice reindeer stew is the perfect treat after a sporty day.

Day trip to the North Cape

Visiting the North Cape is a highlight for many tourists in Northern Norway. So this is the destination of this whole day excursion. We depart from Hammerfest and drive through scenic arctic landscapes, to the mainland along the Porsangerfjord and to the island of Magerøya, where North Cape is located. We will have lunch at the tourist centre at the plateau. Then it will be time to return to Hammerfest.

Day trip to Alta

Alta is the biggest town in Finnmark and counts as a hub for northern lights hunters in the winter season. This day trip leads to the most important sights of this exciting town. We focus on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alta – the stone carvings in Hjemmeluft. Here at Alta museum we will have a lunch break. After that we continue with a visit of the Northern Lights Cathedral and a walk in the town centre before we head back to Hammerfest
